What you leave able to do

Two days built around group case study work on real incident material, taught by people who investigate for a living.

Lead the initial response. Take control in the first hours, secure what matters, and scope the investigation to the size of the event.

Plan and run a PEEPO. Gather People, Environment, Equipment, Procedures and Organisation evidence in a way that gets used rather than filed.

Interview well. Get accurate accounts from people who may be shaken, defensive, or certain they already know the answer.

Build a defensible timeline. Turn statements and records into a clear sequence of what actually happened, and see the gaps in it.

Analyse past the individual. Work from the event out to absent or failed defences and the organisational factors behind them, using real ICAM codes.

Write it so it lands. Recommendations someone can genuinely action, in a report that holds up when it is questioned.

The person who gets called when something goes wrong

You are expected to lead the investigation rather than assist with it. Usually a WHS professional, a manager or supervisor, a safety representative, a technical or maintenance specialist, or an operational leader. Sit on teams without leading them? ICAM for Team Members is the better fit, and it is one day.

Lead initial response to and investigate WHS incidents

The unit is included in the price. The two days are the training. Everyone who attends receives a Certificate of Attendance from ICAM Australia. The nationally recognised unit is earned afterwards, by a self-paced assessment, and is issued by Training Education and Management Services Pty Ltd, RTO 91852.

What the assessment involves, so nobody is surprised
  1. Attend the two days. Your Certificate of Attendance is issued regardless of what you do next.
  2. After the course you complete the assessment in your own time: written questions and a case study, self-paced.
  3. Submit it to the RTO. Assessors give feedback if anything needs another go.
  4. On a satisfactory result the RTO issues your Statement of Attainment for BSBWHS515.

The course itself is not the qualification. Attendance earns the ICAM Australia certificate. The nationally recognised unit only comes from completing the assessment. There are no prerequisites and no licensing requirement attached to it.

Questions people ask before they book

How long is the ICAM for Lead Investigators course?

Two days. Face to face sessions run 8.30am to 4.30pm local time. Live online sessions run 10am to 5.30pm AEST.

Do I need any previous ICAM experience to attend?

No. The course is for anyone who leads, manages or contributes to workplace incident investigations.

What certification will I receive?

Everyone who attends receives a Certificate of Attendance from ICAM Australia. You can then complete a self-paced assessment for the nationally recognised unit BSBWHS515, Lead initial response to and investigate WHS incidents. The unit is included in the public course price and is issued by Training Education and Management Services Pty Ltd, RTO 91852.

Can I complete the course online?

Yes. Live online sessions are run by a facilitator, and you take part in the discussions and group activities. A self-paced e-learning version is also available.

Is in-house ICAM Lead Investigator training available?

Yes. We run it for a group at your site, with the scenarios built around your own procedures, templates and terminology. It is often the practical option when several people need training.

I trained in ICAM a while ago. Which course should I do?

If you completed ICAM training two years ago or more, the one day ICAM Refresher Workshop brings your practice up to date with the current method.
