ICAM & Bowtie Fundamentals - PNG
This three (3) day course is designed for personnel who lead safety in an organisation, either as frontline management or safety professionals. It covers two key elements of a risk-based safety management system, Risk Assessment, using the Bowtie methodology and Incident Investigation, using the ICAM investigation methodology. Participants gain an applied understanding of both methodologies and learn the knowledge and skills required to effectively lead and facilitate risk assessment workshops and incident investigations.
For those personnel responsible for managing risk, it is to have in-depth knowledge and skills not only of how to manage risk, but how to manage resources to achieve the incident aim of reduction of risk and prevention of incidents and to prevent reoccurrence when an incident does happen.
What is Bowtie Fundamentals?
Bowtie Fundamentals integrates two core components of a risk-based safety management system:
- Bowtie risk analysis for structured risk assessment
- ICAM methodology for incident investigation
Participants develop practical capability in conducting Bowtie hazard analysis, facilitating risk workshops, and linking investigation findings back to control effectiveness. The course reinforces how prevention and investigation work together to reduce risk and mitigate recurrence.
Why Bowtie Fundamentals Matter
Organisations operating in high-risk environments require clear visibility of hazards, threats, controls and consequences.
The Bowtie methodology supports:
- Structured hazard identification and risk assessment
- Stronger critical control management
- Improved oversight of operational exposures
- More defensible regulatory compliance risk management
When combined with ICAM, organisations are better positioned to move beyond surface-level findings and address systemic contributing factors. This strengthens risk controls, improves accountability, and enhances overall safety performance.
